Deafness

Studies Reveal: Deafness and hearing loss, multi-causal conditions

There can be many different causes of deafness and hearing loss. The causes are often vastly different depending on the age of onset of the condition. Hearing loss and deafness can develop at or before birth, mid-life and older age.
Here is a list of things that can affect your ability to hear.

Possible causes of hearing loss:

1. Pregnancy and Birth Complications

In some cases, babies are born without the ability to hear. The condition can be genetic, even if there is no known history of genetic hearing loss..   Hearing loss and deafness can also develop before or at birth due to a number of infections, premature birth, birth injury, severe jaundice and many other factors associated with maternal and foetal health.

2. Certain medications

There are many commonly used medications that can cause hearing issues. Examples can include  aspirin, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, certain antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs.  However, damage may only occur at certain dosages or with certain types, and the benefits of the medication may outweigh the possible risk to hearing. These drugs may also affect the balance organ in the same way it affects hearing, so many of these medications can also cause vertigo, imbalance or dizziness.

3. Ear infections

Ear infections can cause a short-term blockage that results in hearing loss. However, if ear infections are chronic or untreated, they can also cause long-term or permanent damage to the structures and tissues leading to permanent hearing loss. This can occur in one or both ears. Ear infections are common in children and do not always lead to permanent hearing issues, but it is important they are managed by a doctor to prevent this.

4. Hearing loss due to aging

Hearing loss is common in people as they age. This can be attributed to natural deterioration of the hearing system or to other health issues that can impact hearing. Hearing aids are often an effective solution to help people with age related hearing loss hear more clearly.

5. Exposure to loud noise

Hearing impairment can be brought about by noise. Loud noises or prolonged exposure to moderate noise can harm the sensitive parts of the ear. Musicians, and factory workers, for example, are exposed to loud noises. This loud noise can cause temporary hearing loss and long-term exposure will often damage the hearing system causing permanent hearing loss. Often this hearing loss shows up years after the exposure to noise.

6. Tinnitus

A ringing sound inside the ears can be an early sign of a hearing problem. Tinnitus itself does not cause hearing loss, but is often a sign of other issues which can cause permanent hearing loss. In some cases, the cause of the tinnitus can be treated. In others, the tinnitus can be managed so it does not impact on quality of life.
